The Best Day of the Year: Why I Can’t Wait to Watch My Learners Graduate This Year
There is a specific date circled in bright red on my calendar every single year. And, no for those of you who know me well, it’s not holiday!! It’s graduation day.
As the day approaches, I can feel the excitement building. There is absolutely nothing that compares to the feeling of sitting in that hall, watching the procession, and waiting to hear the names of my own learners called out.
To an outsider, graduation is a beautiful ceremony filled with caps, gowns, traditions, and photos. But to an educator who specialises in adult learning, that walk across the stage represents something much deeper. It is the final, triumphant stop on a journey that required immense sacrifice, relentless grit, and master-level time management.
Seeing the Face Behind the Screen (and the Schedule)
When you teach adult learners, you get to know them in a very unique way. You don’t just see their academic progress; you see their lives.
Over the course of their studies, I have exchanged emails with these learners late at night after they’ve finally put their kids to bed. I’ve had catch-ups with them during their lunch breaks at their full-time jobs, and I’ve seen them log into learning platforms on weekends when they would much rather be resting.
I know exactly how hard they had to fight for the time to study. I know about the unexpected life events, the work deadlines, the family commitments, and the moments of pure exhaustion where they wondered if they could actually pull this off.
So, when I see them stand up to walk toward that stage, I don’t just see a student getting a diploma. I see:
-
The parent who studied at the kitchen table by the light of a laptop while the house was asleep.
-
The career-changer who balanced a demanding 40-hour workweek with intense academic modules.
-
The individual who had to completely reinvent their relationship with time, boundaries, and priorities to make room for their future.
The Ultimate Validation of “Time Well Spent”
On this website, we talk constantly about time management strategies, productivity hacks, and balancing acts. But graduation day is the ultimate proof of why we do it.
Every difficult choice my learners made—saying “no” to social events, waking up an hour earlier, or meticulously planning out their weeks—was a micro-investment in this exact moment. Seeing them in their caps and gowns is the tangible, beautiful ROI of every single boundary they had to set.
To My Learners Graduating This Year: Thank You
If you are one of my learners reading this as you prepare for the big day: I am so incredibly proud of you.
Thank you for letting me be a small part of your journey. Thank you for your late nights, your stubborn determination, and your trust. Watching you celebrate with your families, your partners, and your children—who watched you sacrifice to achieve this—is the greatest reward any educator could ask for.
I’ll be the one in the audience cheering the loudest, probably wiping away a tear or two, and feeling immensely grateful that I get to do this job.
You didn’t just manage your time; you changed your life. See you at the finish line!
